Get Your Goals Back on Track

Get Your Goals Back on Track

Are your life circumstances getting in the way of working on your goals?

Do you find yourself so busy with life that you become too exhausted to do anything?

I understand!  This recently happened to me.

Recently, I was helping out a couple of family members that had surgery. One family member was in the hospital for a much longer time than was expected. And the other family member came home after their surgery, but I helped to take care of them.

For a  couple of weeks, my goals got pushed over to the side, at least most of them, and I took that time to help out and be with my family during their time of need.

Acknowledge The Goals You Need to Put on Hold

Sometimes, when we stop working on our goals is not always a bad thing, but we need to come back and pick up where we left off.

Getting back into our daily habits can be challenging.

There will be essential circumstances that need your attention immediately, and you will have to put some of your goals on hold and attend to those circumstances.

Example:

During the two weeks, the majority of my goals I set aside for the time being.   The only one that I made sure I continued was my goal of eating healthy. Now don’t get me wrong, even though the food they feed you in the hospital is gross, the restaurants and stores there has some delicious food. They did have whole food plant-based meals as well.

The challenge was to say “no,” especially to their homemade, cook-on-premises, chocolate chip cookies. Those are the best cookies I’ve ever had. And even though I did not have any this time around before, when one of my parents ended up in the same hospital, I had at least three of them a day. Hot and right out of the oven.

So I knew that was a goal that I would have to keep, or I would have drowned my emotions in cookies.

Start Working on Your Goals Again

Understand that, at times, you will become busy.  It may be a struggle to think about your goals.  You may find yourself so busy with your job or family obligations were friends that you may forget.

It is important to remember this one thing:

 YOU CAN START AGAIN!

Just pick up where you left off and start again.

Yes, I know it is hard starting again.

Getting back into the routine of things brings challenges.   After things calmed down, I was just exhausted, emotionally and physically. I do not feel like working on goals, and I do not feel like getting it back into the habit of working on goals; I needed some rest.

I took my time, and I started slowly with my goals. Instead of exercising 1 hour a day like before, I started with 30 minutes a day.   Because I was still getting up around the clock giving medication to a family member, I was exhausted throughout the day, so I took naps.

So getting back into the habit of working on your goals may bring challenges but remember you can overcome those challenges and keep moving forward.

So here I’m going to give you three tips to help you get started once again.

 Tip #1 Revisit Your Goals

Revisit where you left off; note where you are at right now.  One of my goals is to exercise an hour a day. So I Revisited where I left off, but because of continuing circumstances, I did not have the strength nor the energy to exercise an hour day, so I cut it in half and did it for 30 minutes.

It is okay to tweak your goals.  After revisiting your goals, can you pick up right where you left off, or do you need to take a couple of steps back and pick it up from there and then work your way forward?

Tip #2 Make Plans to Work on Your Goals

Make a plan according to what you can do. You may need to start small to build momentum, and it is still a win for you.  For example, you may be in a busy season at work to where you have to give 12 to 16 hours a day to whatever project you are working on. During this season, your goals will have to change because of the time frame of work. And that’s okay. This is when you will find those small goals that will give you those wins that you need to continue to move forward despite the busy season at work.

Be okay with altering your goals if needed.

Tip # 3 Schedule Your Goals and Implement Them

Schedule it when you figure out what changes you must make or tweak. Make sure you put into your planner those changes that you’re going to continue to work on. And don’t just schedule it but implement it.

So those are my three tips for starting again.

1. Visit where you left off.

2. Make a plan according to what you can do.

3. Schedule and implement those changes.

As you find yourself in a season of busyness, know it’s okay to tweak your goals. It’s okay if life has gotten so busy there where is a challenge to work on some of your bigger goals.  Just remember to work on something. Even those small tiny goals will move your life forward.

Until next time.
